Engineering and training

The purpose of rail transit design is a fully integrated system that meets the operator’s long-term needs while delivering maximum return on investment. Each component must be carefully designed, and all subsystems must work together smoothly.

Engineering services

HI-SIM applies state-of-the-art tools and extensive rail transit experience to the design of practical solutions that conform to requirements and standards. We help our clients manage risks, control costs and deliver safe, reliable and efficient rail systems to their passengers.

Our services include system planning, preliminary and detailed design, specification development, procurement strategy, bid evaluation and design review. Where a project needs it, we work together with external experts.

  • Support for E&M systems in feasibility studies
  • Support for technical specifications and tender documents
  • Research projects that investigate and report on new technologies
  • Testing the adequacy of the traction (electrification) system and proposing alternatives
  • General design of the traction system
  • Evaluation of the effects of system improvements
  • Train operation optimization
  • Energy efficiency methods, and their application to manual and signalled systems
  • Signalling solutions and training

Excellence in rail systems engineering

Traction power and electrificationDC and 25 kV AC systems; substations, catenary and third rail.
SignallingInterlocking, fixed-block systems, ATP/ATO algorithms for CBTC.
Rolling stockTraction package sizing, performance and energy consumption.
System typesTrolleybus, tramway, light rail, metro and mainline railways.

The combination of field experience and academic background is a valuable resource for our clients. HI-SIM’s founding partners and team have taken part in the planning, design and development of many rail transit systems.

Signalling, SCADA, automation

The HI-SIM team includes people who have directed the National Railway Signalling Project and personally developed systems such as interlocking, the core of signalling. On this basis we design, develop, review and consult on signalling systems.

HI-SIM also has a team of SCADA and automation experts and, supported by lecturers of the ITU Control and Automation Engineering Department, provides system design and consultancy.

Training

With our academic staff and engineers who have worked on many projects, we train local and foreign experts in traction power and signalling. Training packages are shaped around the client’s needs; the main topics are:

01

Basics of rail system signalling

02

Practical rail system signalling

03

Rail system operation simulation

04

Rail system traction power simulation

Knowledge sharing

HI-SIM is the author of many articles and papers on problems met in real projects and the solutions applied, and shares this knowledge in presentations to raise awareness in the industry. The full list is on the Publications page.
